A point-of-sale system touches almost everything in your business, from payments to inventory to your team's daily workflow. Switching to the wrong one is expensive and disruptive, so ask these five questions before you commit.
1. Is the processor locked to the hardware?
Some POS systems force you to use their in-house payment processing with no way to shop around. If you're ever unhappy with your rates, you'd have to replace the whole system. Look for a setup that gives you flexibility on processing.
2. What happens to my data if I leave?
Your sales history, customer records, and inventory data are valuable. Make sure you can export everything cleanly if you ever decide to move on, and that you actually own your data.
3. What's the real total cost?
Look past the monthly software fee. Ask about hardware costs, payment processing rates, add-on modules, and any long-term contracts or early-termination fees. The sticker price is rarely the whole story.
4. How good is the support?
When your POS goes down during a rush, you need help fast. Ask whether support is available 24/7, whether you reach a real person, and how quickly issues typically get resolved.
5. Will it grow with me?
Pick a system that can handle a second location, more registers, online ordering, or new features as you expand. Outgrowing your POS in a year means doing this whole process all over again.
